Title: Presentations and a quiz

Lesson Overview
This lesson is going to be used to finish up the presentations if needed, answer any questions that they might have, and to also administer a quiz addressing the functions, structures, and importance of the cell organelles. If the presentations are finished, I will then address any questions they may have regarding the organelles and then administer the quiz. If there is time at the end to the quiz we will brainstorm topics that they would like to address during the review day before the exam.

Objectives: Students will be able to…
  • Organize their research in a way that conveys the function, structure, and importance of an organelle
  • Distinguish the important information regarding their organelle from information that is not as important.
  • Explain their organelles function, structure, and importance, in a clear informational way that educates their peers.
  • Identify the different organelles of a cell.
  • Explain the functions, structure, and importance for the various organelles.
  • Relate the organelles function to the characteristics of life.

Opening
At the beginning of the lesson they will have 5 min to answer the question of the day, which will be, write down any questions that you have regarding the information we have covered thus far, use your notebook and any other resources you have. While they are doing this I will take attendance. If there are any more presentations that need to go, I will also set up the projector. After they have finished I will collect the responses, these will be used to help me to know what areas need to be addressed on the review day. The quiz will be administered now or after the remaining group(s) present.

Learning Activities
They will be given 20min for the quiz. The quiz will be on the organelles that they have just researched and presented. The quiz will be for them to label each organelle correctly, list its primary function, and its importance to the cell.

Closing
Depending on if there was a group that needed to present I might have some time to break the class into groups. I will pass out a study sheet to everyone and they will then as a group go through the sheet and brainstorm topics that they think should be included in the review day. I will collect the lists and tell them that tomorrow is the review for the exam, it will address everything we have covered so far, including the organelles and that they need to go over the study sheet and test themselves in order to see what areas they should focus on during the review. I will also tell them that I will hand back their quizzes so they will have them to study from for the exam.

Assessment
Assessment for this lesson is the organelle quiz. Also the questions that they generated in response to the question of the day and during their group collaboration will allow me to assess what aspects the students are having trouble with. This will allow me to develop a review lesson that is catered to them.

Homework
Their homework is to review the study guide I handed them, their notes, and any other resources they have, and write down and questions or concerns they have, in order to better understand the topics they need to work on.
